蟹江山常楽寺龍照院の御本尊十一面観世音菩薩像は、寿永元年（1182年）仏師僧教円によって造立されたといい、国の重要文化財となっています。十一面観音は、救済を求める人々の前に、さまざまな姿に変化して衆生を救済される33応現身と説かれています。重厚な質感や、衣文の深い彫りなど、その容姿は、みずみずしい豊潤さに満ち溢れ、宗教的な創造の結晶美であり、卓越した想像力を与えてくれます。
The principal image of Kaniesan Jorakuji Ryushoin Temple, the Eleven-Headed Kannon Bodhisattva, is said to have been sculpted in 1182 by the Buddhist sculptor Kyoen, and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The Eleven-Headed Kannon is said to be one of 33 manifestations that transforms into various forms to save all livingbeings before those seeking salvation. With its rich texture and deeply carved folds in its robes, its appearance is filled with a fresh and rich quality. It is a beautiful crystallization of religious creativity and inspires the extraordinary imagination.
